Educators Use 3D Printing to Bring STEAM Lesson Plans to Life at MakerBot’s Chicago Makeathon

Posted by Frank Quinlisk on

Taken from Makerbot POSTED BY JESSICA ADAMS At our third STEAM Makeathon event, educators convened at the Industrial Arts & Design Center in Chicago to create exciting 3D printing projects for their curriculums. In just two days, these teachers, tinkerers, and 3D printing enthusiasts brought STEAM lessons to life with engaging 3D models and prints. Attendees also enjoyed breakout sessions on 3D printing, 3D design, photographing 3D prints, and post-processing 3D prints. With some help from the MakerBot team, they created 3D printing lesson plans that could advance student learning while satisfying standards. To kick things off, we asked attendees...

Daimler Trucks To Use 3D Printing in Spare Parts Production

Posted by Jacqui Adams on

Taken from Entrepeneur Daimler, the world's largest truck manufacturer, will use three-dimensional printing (3D) to produce spare parts, the latest example of how digital technologies are radically reshaping automotive manufacturing and its supply chain. Rather than shipping vehicle parts across the globe, carmakers including BMW and Volkswagen are experimenting with so-called additive manufacturing. This relies on sending a digital blueprint of a component to a printer which creates parts by using lasers to melt powders into plastic, glass, metals and even ceramics. By printing new parts, automakers can save logistics and warehouse storage costs and produce complex components at low volumes....

Fourth graders at Roy B. Kelley Elementary design and produce a prosthetic hand for their classmate

Taken from Lockport Union-Sun & Journal By Rachel Fuerschbach The door of possibilities was opened for 10-year-old Ethan James when he and his fourth-grade classmates at Roy B. Kelley Elementary School produced a prosthetic hand for him to use. Ethan, who was born without a right hand, is now able to grab objects, shake someone's hand and swing a bat, all things that he wasn't able to do or struggled to do previously. While pregnant with Ethan, Jane James and her husband Ken were told that Ethan was not fully developing. He was born without a right hand and one...
